By how much? It’s 12x greater. 🤯
Don’t get me wrong, social media is great for raising awareness of your brand. Both email marketing and social media should be part of a joined up content marketing strategy.
But if your brand relies on social media marketing over emails, you’re missing a trick.
Why? ROI. The ROI on marketing emails has stayed steady at 36/1 for the last few years.
That’s right, an average return of $36 for every $1 spent on email marketing.
Social media? You’re looking at an ROI of 2.8/1. So $2.80 for every $1 spent.
So why do so many brands, particularly new and growing ones, shy away from email marketing?
It can seem daunting, coming up with content for emails. Or you’re worried about your emails ending up in spam folders and going unseen and unloved. Or perhaps it just seems like one thing too many to tackle when you’re already working all the hours building your business.
Well, let me address those concerns.
Emailing weekly, never mind daily, can seem like a lot. But it’s achievable, and definitely desirable, to improve returns from your email list.
Your emails don’t have to be huge long screeds of text. And if you mix up broadcast emails with:
🚀 Product launches
📦 Back in stock announcements
🗓️ Emails tied to specific days (that could be anniversaries, local history or events relevant to your brand, or international biscuit day or what have you)
🛍️ Flash sale announcements
Then you’ll have more than enough content.
It’s easy to stay out of spam folders too. First, you’ll need your IT whizz to make sure you’ve got certain things on your website’s DNS records (DKIM, DMARC, SPF, BIMI). There are lots of helpful guides online to help you sort this if you’re doing it yourself too.
Then, keep your emails plain. Plain text beats image heavy emails for deliverability every day of the week. It may sound counterintuitive for e-commerce brands, but trust me. People are more likely to receive, open, read, and click through on plain and simple emails.
So keep images to a minimum. The focus is on what you’re saying, and how you’re saying it.
Does it seem like just another thing to do? Well, you can always set aside a few hours once a week to batch a whole bunch of outgoing emails. There are ways to do it quickly and efficiently.
Or you could always hire a specialist email copywriter to help you out on it… Luckily, if you’re reading this, then you’ve already found one. 🙃
